The third and last season of the field data collection for the model of the optimal AW habitat is over. The job was done throughout June and covered not only Biebrza marshes as during previous years, but also included calcareous marshes near Chełm. Two teams of volunteers worked simultaneously: Agata Nowogrodzka and Aleksandra Malinowska plus Michalina Mikłos, Ania Wiśniewska and Mike Trubridge (RSPB guest from the UK).

Sample transects were selected using results of AW counts in previous seasons. A level of water table, structure, height and species composition of vegetation were the main habitat measurements on each transect.

The whole set of data was additionally assisted by invertebrate sampling (identification and measurements in a lab). Information on food availability and detailed data on physical quality of habitat is being used for the modeling of the optimal AW habitat.

In spite of weather conditions, the whole planned set of data was successfully collected and the work was very fruitful. Our volunteers  worked hard ignoring small contusions, insect bites and plenty of water, both from the sky and under the feet.
