Different activities will be used to focus the community's attention and to win support for the protection of Aquatic Warbler including: an internet site, leaflets, co-operation with the media and field work. National and local action plans will be developed together with management plans for the protection of the species. These will be initially agreed by all stakeholders and prepared according to the scientific requirements and local methods of land management. Direct management of habitats will be carried out whenever it is necessary, in order to save the Pomeranian population and to improve the habitat conditions near Biebrza.
Activities will include controlling water levels, bush removal, extensive grazing, late mowing of marshy meadows and peat bogs (manual and mechanical), summer and winter reed mowing and experimental burning (in Germany).
To develop the best methods at each site, the effects of management will be monitored according to selected habitat parameters and bird numbers. Annual workshops, devoted to the best methods and co-operation with other projects, will serve to share the knowledge gained in different locations.
To ensure sustainability of the solutions and activities carried out as part of the project, emphasis will be put on developing and testing economic means of management, such as mutually profitable agreements between land users, burning, and alternative sources of income generation such as thermoenergetic use of biomass and tourism.
The project will also develop and promote suitable policies and financial mechanisms to benefit Aquatic Warbler and its hbitats e.g. appropriate agricultural and environmental packages.
